New York may have the finest fire department in the country, but we also have some of the worst traffic and gridlock. Without a functioning fire-suppression system in place, a fire could easily spread from one apartment to an entire floor or building by the time New York’s bravest make it to the scene.

A fire-suppression system involves a series of overhead pipes and sprinkler heads, a fire pump and a jockey pump that are linked to a fire alarm system. If one component in this complex system fails, the entire system could be rendered useless and lives and property put in peril. Fred Smith Plumbing has the experience and know-how to make sure a building is up to code and ready for anything.

Mandated Testing
All fire and sprinkler systems must be tested at least once every five years in the presence of a New York Fire Department representative. Sprinkler systems can require more frequent testing by different agencies.

Replacing Defective Pipes and Valves
When it comes to fire suppression, there’s no room for maintenance lapses. Rely on Fred Smith to check and replace defective check and  gate valves, corroded piping and any other part of the system as necessary.

Freeze-ups of Standpipe Lines
Standpipe lines, located up at the roof tank, can be quite problematic. Since they’re never used unless there is a test or an actual fire, these are more apt to freeze than other plumbing lines.

Sprinkler and standpipe repairs and tests are among Fred Smith’s top specialties. We have full time crews dedicated to accomplishing these tasks, quickly and efficiently (and for less money). Also, time is particularly tight since the building’s water must be shut off while these tests are being conducted. This must be coordinated with the super, managing agents, tenants and most important, the Fire Department. We have a full-time expediter on staff to coordinate everything.
