Fire Suppression

The FDNY may be one of the finest fire departments in the country, but if their trucks are stuck in traffic, fires can spread and get out of control in a hurry. In a city like New York, fire suppression systems are a critical component to keeping high-rise buildings safe from devastating fires.

Fire suppression systems include a series of overhead pipes and sprinkler heads, fire pumps, valves, hoses, water storage tanks, alarm systems and other critical parts. If one component in this complex system fails, the entire system can be rendered useless, putting lives and property in peril.

Mandated Inspection and Testing

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is the national authority on fire, electrical, and building safety. The FDNY adopts the NFPA 25 Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. Some of requirements in the standard are:

  • Fire and sprinkler systems must be tested at least once every five years in the presence of a FDNY representative
  • Each component part of the system must be inspected and tested at specified frequencies, and such activity must be documented for FDNY review
  • Fire Pumps require monthly testing
